The Curriculum and E-Learning Branch is responsible to develop courses of
study for use in kindergarten to grade 12 schools as part of Saskatchewan’s
Core Curriculum reform. Core Curriculum includes components and initiatives
such as Common Essential Learnings, Aboriginal Content & Perspectives,
Resource-based learning, Gender Equity, and Multicultural Education. Core
Curriculum is developmental in nature and is based on a kindergarten to
grade 12 continuum. In recognition of the stages of child growth and development,
curricula are written at the kindergarten (K), elementary (1-5), middle
(6-9), and secondary (10-12) levels. In addition to responsibility for
developing the K-12 program of studies, the Branch is responsible for supports
to instructional delivery, curriculum implementation, and career services.
The department uses a curriculum development process that includes:
- evaluation such as provincial curriculum evaluations, provincial
and national assessments, provincial needs assessments, and other assessment
sources
- design and development work including research, provincial initiatives,
and field review (or piloting) and other consultation processes to
draft the curriculum
- draft document refinement and publication
- professional development for educators to support curriculum implementation
- strategies for curriculum renewal.
