  Network Services Unit  
 

Transferred from the Saskatchewan Communications Network (SCN) in April, 2003, the three positions within the Network Services Unit are responsible for the oversight, coordination, scheduling, and administration of satellite, CommunityNet, and other electronic technologies to support the distribution of educational programming. On average, approximately 3,000 registrants from 130 communities participate annually in over 55 televised/multi-mode secondary and post-secondary courses delivered via the E-Learning Satellite Network. Over 230 classrooms in 200 communities are equipped to participate in programming offered through the satellite network while over 900 schools, school division, libraries and regional college offices are participating in the CommunityNet infrastructure for the learning sector. Specifically the unit:

  • Works with post-secondary and K-12 education partners to support development and delivery of courses and learning resources through Internet, CommunityNet, Saskatchewan's E-Learning Satellite Network (operated by SCN), and other technologies;
  • Coordinates and provides oversight of CommunityNet and the E-Learning Satellite Network technical services and supports;
  • Plans, schedules, and promotes CommunityNet and televised offerings;
  • Administers E-Learning Satellite Network and CommunityNet receive sites, televised course development and delivery;
  • Liaises with ITO, SCN, SaskTel, SPM and other service providers on technical needs and solutions;
  • Researches and tests new and emerging applications and technologies to enhance learning opportunities within the sector;
  • Works with Corporate Information Technology and the Educational Technology Consortium to monitor network usage and performance, and conduct capacity planning and future network requirements;
  • Coordinates and delivers professional development opportunities for system users within both the televised and CommunityNet environments and for K-12 educators involved in the delivery of live televised courses to assist in adapting materials to alternative delivery modes, and incorporating new technologies into the televised classroom.
