Description
It is assumed that enrollment in Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Programs in Saskatchewan is not likely to exceed five percent (5%) of the total secondary level population. There may be schools that experience a high level of enrollment in Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Programs at the secondary level. These higher enrollments may be due to a number of factors. Regional Office personnel are available to discuss concerns with school divisions regarding increasing or large enrollments in Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Programs.
Policy
| C.I.1 | The Regional Director approves a request made by a school division to develop Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Programs and specifies the length and conditions of approval for the programs. Courses may be approved for up to a five year cycle. The initial year of approval is termed the Pilot Year. |
| C.I.2 | Students enrolled in an Alternative Education Program must be registered with the Registrar's Unit on the Student Demographic Enrollment Form, by age 14 years, 8 months. |
| C.I.3 | An 18, 28, 38 course may not be counted as a credit toward completion of a Regular Education Program. |
| C.I.4 | In order to receive official recognition of an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program, a student must complete eight courses with a minimum of 820 hours of instruction at each grade level. |
| C.I.5 | The credit requirements for an Alternative Grade 10 are as follows:
|
| C.I.6 | There are six elective areas recognized in Alternative Grade 10, 11 or 12 Programs:
|
| C.I.7 | An Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program may include courses from the Regular Education Program. Prerequisites that apply in the Regular Education Program also apply when those courses are used in an Alternative Education Program. |
| C.I.8 | Students in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program are allowed to take up to six (6) credits in any one subject area while enrolled in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program. In the Practical and Applied Arts area, more credits may be taken, as the PAA area involves several subject disciplines. |
| C.I.9 | Individual course grades for a student enrolled in an approved Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program must be reported to the Registrar's Unit in the form of percentage grades. The transcript indicates the completion of an Alternative Grade 10, Alternative Grade 11 or Alternative Grade 12. |
| C.I.10 | Saskatchewan Education provides a process to facilitate a student's request to transfer from an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program to a Regular Education Program. The following principles apply:
School divisions are encouraged to have well-articulated policies and procedures regarding the enrollment of students in Alternative Education Programs. |
| C.I.11 | Parents and students should be consulted prior to the enrollment of a student in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program. |

Guidelines
This information should be made available to parents and to students, prior to enrollment in the program and should also be on file in the Regional Office of Education.
School divisions may want to develop a signed or formal agreement for parent/guardian signature that outlines the implications of enrolling in an Alternative Education Program.
The student should receive recognition for knowledge and skills already attained that match those of the Regular Education Program and the student should be placed at the appropriate level for successful course completion in the Regular Education Program.
