C. Alternative Education Programs

    Policy

    C.I.1 The Regional Director approves a request made by a school division to develop Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Programs and specifies the length and conditions of approval for the programs. Courses may be approved for up to a five year cycle. The initial year of approval is termed the Pilot Year.
    C.I.2 Students enrolled in an Alternative Education Program must be registered with the Registrar's Unit on the Student Demographic Enrollment Form, by age 14 years, 8 months.
    C.I.3 An 18, 28, 38 course may not be counted as a credit toward completion of a Regular Education Program.
    C.I.4 In order to receive official recognition of an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program, a student must complete eight courses with a minimum of 820 hours of instruction at each grade level.
    C.I.5 The credit requirements for an Alternative Grade 10 are as follows:
    • two courses of Language Arts/Communication
    • one course of each of the following
      • Mathematics
      • Work Experience
    • plus four electives at the grade 10, 11, or 12 level.

      The credit requirements for an Alternative Grade 11 are as follows:

      • two courses of Language Arts/Communication
      • one course of Work Experience
      • plus five electives at the grade 10, 11, or 12 level.

      The credit requirements for an Alternative Grade 12 are as follows:

      • two courses of Language Arts/Communication
      • one course of Work Experience
      • plus five electives at the grade 10, 11, or 12 level
      • students must have taken the following at one of the levels:
        • one course of Life Skills
        • one course of Career Education
        • one course of Science
        • one course of Social Science.

      The remaining electives may be selected from any courses within the Regular Education Program and the Alternative Education Program.

    C.I.6 There are six elective areas recognized in Alternative Grade 10, 11 or 12 Programs:
    • Arts/Aesthetic Education (these courses may include topics such as art, music, art appreciation, creative dramatics, creative writing, graphic arts, graphic design, photography)

    • Health/Physical Education (these courses may include topics such as individual athletic/sports activities, wellness, group athletic activities, body awareness, movement education, dance, general health education, personal hygiene, sex education, first aid)

    • Business Education (these courses may include topics such as keyboarding, computer literacy, basic accounting, budgeting, banking, basic office procedures, merchandising)

    • Technical/Vocational Education (these courses may include topics such as mechanics, construction, electricity/electronics, welding, drafting, cosmetology, commercial cooking, industrial arts, automotive maintenance, automotive management)

    • Family Studies (these courses may include topics such as family nutrition and food preparation, clothing and fashion, housing, design, family life, home economics, parenting, decision making, independent living, house maintenance, and residential management)

    • Spiritual Development (these courses may include such topics as Christian ethics or other spiritual studies).

      Any of these courses may be developed and offered as 18, 28, or 38 courses. They do not require prerequisites.

    C.I.7 An Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program may include courses from the Regular Education Program. Prerequisites that apply in the Regular Education Program also apply when those courses are used in an Alternative Education Program.
    C.I.8 Students in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program are allowed to take up to six (6) credits in any one subject area while enrolled in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program. In the Practical and Applied Arts area, more credits may be taken, as the PAA area involves several subject disciplines.
    C.I.9 Individual course grades for a student enrolled in an approved Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program must be reported to the Registrar's Unit in the form of percentage grades. The transcript indicates the completion of an Alternative Grade 10, Alternative Grade 11 or Alternative Grade 12.
    C.I.10 Saskatchewan Education provides a process to facilitate a student's request to transfer from an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program to a Regular Education Program. The following principles apply:
    • students transferring from an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program to the Regular Education Program must meet credit requirements under Core Curriculum Policy for secondary level completion (24 credits)

    • required subjects cannot be waived

    • a course designated 18, 28, 38 cannot be used toward the credit requirements for Regular Education Secondary Level completion.

    School divisions are encouraged to have well-articulated policies and procedures regarding the enrollment of students in Alternative Education Programs.

    C.I.11 Parents and students should be consulted prior to the enrollment of a student in an Alternative Grade 10, 11, or 12 Program.
